Ferry from Claonaig to Lochranza Arran

About us

Hi there, I’m Sandy and together with my friend Helen (the housekeeper) we run Pladda Cottage.  I bought the cottage in 2021, spent 6 months renovating it with my partner David and my passions are looking after our 14 year old rescue dog Sunny who we adopted 2 years ago, exploring and sharing my love of travelling (especially of Arran and Scotland), and crafting.

Renovation of cosy 2 bedroom self catering holiday cottage on Arran

The renovation

As is often the case, the renovation was a much bigger task than we initially thought, with the walls and roof having to be opened up to resolve some challenges that weren’t initially apparent.  The cottage was completely gutted, a new kitchen with all new appliances, new bathroom, new floor tiles and new window were then fitted.  Local trades carried out all the work, except in one area where specialists weren’t available.

Decoration

We purposely wanted to make the cottage unique and special, so bought the decorative items mostly from local businesses, thus enabling us to incorporate the work of some of the many crafts people on Arran and those with very close ties to Arran.  Special thanks to Bay Wool and Crafts (Whiting Bay), Arranach Barrel Furniture (Machrie) and Janelles (Lamlash).

Reclaimed and sustainable wooden furniture and large refillable toiletry bottles.

Sustainability

Throughout the renovation sustainability has been very important to us.  Some of the original furniture was re-used, other pieces rehomed, and most of the new furniture and other items bought were made of sustainable or reclaimed wood included old Arran whisky barrels.  New energy efficient appliances (most with eco settings), and light bulbs and extra insulation were installed.  We also use refillable toiletries, our housekeeper lives within a quarter of a mile of the cottage, and all the laundry is also done within a quarter of a mile of the cottage.

Eco-friendly

As part of our sustainability journey we have now reviewed the housekeeping/household products we use and provide to guests, and are making changes to introduce more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives from ethically minded companies.  These include using refillable washing up liquid and cleaning products, and more eco-friendly products including kitchen, toilet rolls, dishwasher products and washing machine sheets.
